Dr. Lajpatrai Mehra – A Pioneer of Neurotherapy
Dr. Lajpatrai Mehra was born on 23rd August 1932 in a highly respected family of Amritsar, as the seventh child of Sri Ramgopal Mehra and Smt. Kesara Devi. A legend in his lifetime, he is celebrated for developing a unique, medicine-free healing system—Lajpatrai Mehra’s Neurotherapy —and for dedicating his life to selfless service to humanity.
At the age of 11, young Lajpatrai suffered from a severe stomach ailment that persisted for months and resisted the best available medical care. By fate, he encountered an elderly man who relieved his pain almost instantly through a simple native technique of “setting the navel” by manipulating his body.
Unlike most children, Lajpatrai did not let the incident pass. Deeply inspired, he meditated on the experience and longed to help others. Drawing from ancient Indian texts that describe the navel as the body’s energy center, he began experimenting. Although the old man had not shared his method, Lajpatrai realized it involved applying pressure on specific points. Using his mother—who often suffered stomach aches—as his first subject, he innovated a technique using his feet to replicate the effect and relieve her pain.
Once confident in his method, he began treating neighbors with remarkable success. Soon, people from near and far, suffering from constipation, dysentery, and abdominal disorders, came to his family home for relief.
The 1947 Partition uprooted the family, forcing them to leave behind their prosperous life in Amritsar and begin anew in Mumbai as refugees. As the only son among nine siblings, young Lajpatrai worked tirelessly to support his family while continuing his mission of healing. Despite limited resources, he devoted much of his free time to treating patients, constantly refining and innovating his techniques.
Although formal education was interrupted by Partition, he was later awarded his matriculation certificate for his selfless service in refugee camps. Still, his integrity compelled him to sit for the exam years later, which he successfully cleared. Family obligations prevented him from pursuing further formal studies, yet his thirst for knowledge drove him to study human anatomy, physiology, and natural healing extensively. Eventually, he earned a degree in Naturopathy.
Through years of practice and deep study of ancient Indian wisdom, Dr. Mehra developed a distinct healing system that applied principles of physiology in a way unparalleled in modern medicine. This system was later named Dr. Lajpatrai Mehra’s Neurotherapy by his students and admirers.
Guided by compassion and a vision to spread healing widely, Dr. Mehra began training students with just a handful of followers at first, he went on to train more than 1,000 practitioners, conduct over a hundred free camps across India, and treat countless patients both in India and abroad.
Graduates of the academy run their own centers, where the therapy is practiced as the sole mode of treatment. Many of these are supported by social organizations such as Seva Bharati, while others are managed independently by students, without financial involvement from Dr. Mehra or his teaching team.
Dr. Lajpatrai Mehra’s life embodies innovation, resilience, and service. He transformed personal suffering into a gift for humanity—an enduring legacy that continues to heal and inspire across generations and geographies.
